    • This database can also be accessed from home, but you must get the username and password from a media specialist. Use this database designed for schools, to search magazines, newspapers, and reference books for information on current events, the arts, science, popular culture, health, etc.
    • EBSCO ( http://search.epnet.com ) This database can also be accessed either from school or from home. Again, username and password information can be obtained in the Media Center . Databases available include Advanced Placement Source, Book Collection: Nonfiction, General Science Collection, History Reference Center , MagillOnHistory, ERIC, Professional Development Collection, Vocational & Career Collection, Newspaper Source , and others. This is a valuable tool that should not be overlooked by researchers. Much information can be obtained that the SHS Media Center would not be able to provide otherwise.
    • Both of these databases can be accessed through the homepage of Destiny (instructions for Destiny access are below.) (You will need the username/password information for home access.).
    • StreamlineSC(http://www.scetv.org/educationstreamlinesc/index.cfm) You will need to obtain username and password from the Media Center. Students have only limited access through your subject teacher(s) but teachers, parents, and students are all encouraged to use the information/clips for instruction as these do not violate copyright infringements, as long as they are used within the school district (not allowed for use on an open website).

SERVICES

The Socastee High School Media Center provides a variety of services for both the students and the faculty.

  • ACCESS – The SHS Media Center collection is cataloged and available for searching by both faculty and students through any networked computer within the building. (Go to START – NETWORK PROGRAMS – MEDIA – DESTINY LIBRARY SEARCH).
    • The new card catalog (now called Destiny) can be accessed through the district site- http://www3.hcs.k12.sc.us/ - then click on the option on the left titled “Research Log Ins”) you can have access to our resources 24 hours a day. Refer to the home page for Destiny here at Socastee to see quick links to sites that may be of interest. Materials can now be requested through interlibrary loan ( ILL ) but the request must be made through the librarians. Please note that you can check for materials from other schools if SHS does not have the title you need.
  • REFERENCE – The reference collection allows the media specialists to help answer questions and provide print resources for classes. If materials cannot be located within the library, outside sources can be utilized.
  • INSTRUCTION – Media Center orientation is available as well as instruction in the use of the materials and equipment.
  • COLLABORATION – Teachers are encouraged to consult with the media specialists for planning and assistance in the selection of sources. Bibliographies are also available upon request.
