AFJROTC
Academic Team - The Academic Team is a competitive group specializing inthe challenging arena of mental gymnastic. The team competes in seven local competitions and several state competitions, winning thousands of dollars for each of the members of the 4-person team for college, and additional money for the school. A “knowledge test” is given to prospective members before acceptance into the club, which is open to all grade levels. Sponsor:
Art Club - The Art Club participates in visual artistic projects such as design for the SHS Madrigal Dinner, SHS drama productions, and other major function throughout the school year. There are no special requirements. The club is open to 10th, 11th, and 12th grades. There is a $3.00 membership fee. Sponsor - Kelley French.
Beta Club - Community service and academic excellence are the benchmarks of the club. Students must maintain a B average and accrue up to 40 hours of service per year. The club is open to all grade levels, but students must fill out an application during the spring. Sponsor -Cathy Carroll.
DECA - DECA helps students develop skills and competence for marketing careers, build self-esteem, experience leadership and practice community service. Students must be currently in or plan to enroll in one of the Business or Marketing classes offered at SHS. Students must complete an information sheet and pay for a membership. Diversity Club - This club brings students together from different cultures to discuss cultural differences, race, and race relations. To be human is the commonality that we all share. There are no special requirements. The club is open to all grade levels. Sponsor - Sandy Friedman.
Drama Club - The club is involved with improving improvisational acting skills. Students who have an appreciation of the theater are encouraged to join. There are no special requirements. The club is open to all grade levels. Sponsor - Matt McCarty.
Drill Team - This group allows the cadets to hone their leadership and team skills through teamwork. They compete at the state level throughout the year. Students must be a member of the JROTC. The team is open to all classes. Sponsor - Chief William Forbus.
FCA - Fellowship of Christian Athletes is a national athletic ministry, its primary constituency being athletes and coaches from junior high school to the professional level. The organization uses athletes/coaches as its role models and spokespersons. There are no special requirements. The club is open to all grade levels. Sponsor - Tim Renfrow.
FFA - The National FFA Organization is dedicated to making a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education. The FFA motto gives members twelve short words to live by as they experience the opportunities in the organization. Learning to Do, Doing to Learn, Earning to Live, Living to Serve. To join, a student must be enrolled in or previously taken at least one agricultural education class. Sponsor - Darrell Ricketts.
French Club - The French Club meets once every two weeks to promote the French language and culture. They also sponsor numerous breakfasts that are very popular at SHS. The club is open to all grade levels. Sponsor - Danny Wilson.
Interact Club - The club is sponsored by Socastee High School and the Surfside Beach Rotary Club. The club participates in community service ventures inside and outside of the school. There are presently 25 active members. There are no special requirements. The club is open to all grade levels.
Jr. Civitans - This service club for young people tailored specifically for training them to become “Builders of Good Citizenship” in the home, school, community and nation. The purpose is to develop initiative, leadership, and to encourage young people to live a fuller life enriched by unselfish service to others. Open to all grade levels. Sponsor - Rita Edge.
KHAS - The Kitty Hawk Air Society is the AFJROTC honor society. Its purpose is to promote high academic standards, develop leadership, and promote the knowledge of the Air Force in aerospace education. Students must maintain an A average in JROTC and an overall B average in all other subjects. Members are inducted after the first semester of each year. Open to all grade levels. Sponsor - Col. Kiracofe.
Latin Club -The club meets the first and third Wednesday of each month after school to discuss cultural events in ancient Rome, Roman mythology or history. There are no special requirements. The club is open to all grade levels. Sponsor - Sherrill Allen.
Math Team - The Math Team participates in math contests throughout South Carolina. Students who enjoy math are encouraged to join. There are no special requirements. The club is open to all grade levels. Sponsor - Pete Zuraw.
Mock Trial Team - Students are given hypothetical situations and then assigned the many duties associated with courtroom procedures. Competition begins in February and ends in March with state competition. Students must have an overall B average and three teacher recommendations. The club is open to all grade levels. Mu Alpha Theta - This club is a national honor society for mathematics. It promotes mathematics as being interesting and important. Students must have an overall B average in their math classes and have completed two college prep math courses. Sponsor: Tony Karpinski
National Honor Society - Students are inducted on the basis of service and leadership experience, exemplary character and academic record, and they must have taken at least two honors or higher-level courses per year. Monthly meetings are held to arrange service activities. You are required to document 36 hours of service per year. The application process begins during the spring of the sophomore year. Membership is open to Juniors and Seniors who qualify. Sponsor: Julie Skelton
National Technical Honor Society – Thousands of schools and colleges throughout the U.S. and its territories have a chapter of the honor society on their campus. These member schools agree that NTHS encourages higher scholastic achievement, cultivates a desire for personal excellence, and helps top students find success in today's highly competitive workplace. Quill and Scroll - International Honorary Society for high school journalists. Students must be juniors or seniors, be in the upper third of their class, and work in some phase of journalism or school publication. Recommendation from teacher/advisor. Open to juniors and seniors. Sponsor: Patricia Deas
SADD - (Students Against Destructive Decisions). This group has grown to become the nation’s dominant peer-to- peer youth prevention organization with chapters all over the nation. The club is dedicated to addressing the issues of underage drinking, impaired driving, and drug use. The club is open to all grade levels. Sponsors - Andrea Paolini and Melissa Goff
SEAL - (Student Environmental & Aquatic Leaders). The club is for all students interested in learning about preserving the oceans, or the environment in general. There are no special requirements. The club is open to all classes. Sponsor - Shannon Stone
Science Club - Members investigate science in a lab setting. There are field trips to symposiums and workshops. Student members become members of the South Carolina Junior Academy of Science. There are no special requirements. The club is open to all grade levels. Sponsor: Shannon Stone
Science Olympiad - The group participates in statewide competition including biology, physics, chemistry, and earth science activities. There are no special requirements. The club is open to all grade levels. Sponsor: Greg French
Spanish Club - A club comprised of people interested in the Latin Culture and willing to promote spanish by giving back to the community. The club is open to all grades and there are no GPA requirements. Sponsor: Penny Herzog
Spindles Literary Magazine - Students collect original pieces of work from Socastee students and place them together in a magazine format. The club is open to all grade levels. Sponsor: Donna Mitchell
Serteens - A service club for students interested in what's going on in the world and are motivated to improve their world through service. The Serteens program is a great avenue for students to identify and contribute to community needs, as well as to fulfill the community service requirement established by many schools. There are no requirements and it is open to all grade levels. Sponsor: Kristen Snyder
Student Council - The governing body that represents the four classes and individual students at Socastee High School. It is the duty of the council to plan, coordinate and evaluate various school activities such as homecoming, pageants, and pep rallies. The council is open to all grade levels. Tri-M International Music Honor Society - The club is an honor society for music students. An overall B average with an A average in all music classes is a requirement. The students are nominated and must audition. The group explores music careers and college programs. There is also a community service requirement. The society is open to all grade levels. Sponsor:
X-treme Adventure Club - We go where others don’t! Club members are involved with community service, camping trips to mountains, manatee trip (Fla.), paintball competition, and boating. There are no special requirements. The club is open to all grade levels. Sponsors: Richard Taylor and Drew Gaddy
