Job Opportunities
May 27, 2009

FYI  Things have changed for this Summer Season.  Employers have higher expectations of their Employees.  Expect for things to be different.  They want Mature, Reliable, Loyal and Intelligent Staff. Customer Service is the key.  Everyone will be operating with fewer employees and expecting higher productivity.  If you think you are "Special" and can't be replaced, think again...  Most businesses have a stack of applications to replace you with.   Appreciate what you have and keep a "Good Attitude."

Most Beach restaurants are hiring Host Staff, Bussers/Runners, Dishwashers, if you are 18 or older there are Waitstaff positions available.  Plan ahead, have your Social Security Card, SC License/Permit/ID's ready for your I-9 Federal Forms.  Put on your best game face, Smile, Walk in, ask for a manager and ask for a job...   Pick your time wisely though.  Don't go at lunch or dinner time, go on Tues-Weds or Thursday to apply.   They are busy on Fridays and many managers don't work Mondays..  Dress appropriately. Ask for the job again, Smile!!!

Former Postings:

FYI's;

 I was just told by a former student who applied for a "Corporate Position" that he was asked during the interview process to provide all of his "Social Network" personal listings.  What is on your FACEBOOK or MySpace account that you don't want others to see???  Expect this to be the norm in the future!!!

I just heard this weekend from one of our businesses that his new (1 week) Student employee, that I helped place, went ballistic when he found out he could not have Fri,Sat,Sun & Mon of Memorial Day Weekend off.  We had worked for over a month to get him this job.  It was close to his home, understanding Managers & Flexible schedule.  The Supervisor explained, we need you to work because we hired you to help us when we have customers. We expect to be busy and need you.   The Student decided that being off was more important than the job we worked so hard to get.     I hope he doesn't come looking for my help next Tuesday.....

I have contacted 11 businesses Monday & today to place St James, Socastee & MBHS students.  It is the first time in my 10 year career that I have struck out on ALL my calls....   Every business that I talked with is waiting till June to see how business is going.  Many are hiring Adults instead of teenagers, because they are more reliable, take things seriously and NEED THE WORK.  What about YOU???

FYI:  I just had a student who was working "Under the Table", "Cash Only".  He was working regular hours 20-25 per week.  Very proud of the fact no taxes were being taken out of his wages.  UNTIL, business owner started having problems.  Employee was let go. Did not receive his last 2 weeks pay. Complained but received no satisfaction because he could not document his hours worked.....

Now I hope you will take this advice.  If you work for a business that pays you cash.  Keep track of your own hours. Log the date and times worked. Also make sure you have the business owners/managers name, phone, address.  I am amazed at the number of kids that I talk with the don't know this info. They say, I don't know, oh, his name was Steve or Mary something...  LOOK OUT FOR YOURSELF.

REMEMBER THIS:  If if sounds to good to be true, it's probably not.

FYI:  Positions are going very fast.  Many of our employers are not planning on hiring as many staff this season as they did last year.  Those that will be hired will be expected to do more, be much more attentive to customer service and have a good attitude all the time.  If you don't, there will be plenty of people glad to take your job....

One of my restaurant friends just told me that a young lady applying for a waitstaff position sat in front of him and chewed on her fingernails while they talked...  She was very personable and had experience and he seriously thought about hiring her until he saw that her nails were all gnawed off.  Think about it, you go to a nice restaurant and the waitress has nasty fingernails...  ???  Makes you think....  What about YOU???

FYI: Be aware, there will only be a couple more of these postings before school is out....

Get Moving....
